The U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer (CPO) collar device is a time-honored symbol of authority, tradition, and service. Featuring the iconic fouled anchor is a a timeless emblem of Navy heritage. This insignia represents the strength and leadership of every Sailor who has earned the rank of E-7 Chief Petty Officer.
Although the fouled anchor first appeared as a cap insignia in 1905, it wasn’t until 1959 that the Navy officially approved its use as collar grade insignia for Chiefs. Since then, it has become a hallmark of pride and professional achievement throughout the fleet.
For Service Khaki, Summer White, and Navy Coveralls, the Chief collar insignia is worn on each collar point. Position the anchor device so it is centered one inch from both the front and lower edges of the collar, aligned at a 45-degree angle pointing outward along an imaginary line bisecting the collar tip. You can use the Navy Pin-iT Card to help with the placement.
On the female Service Dress White uniform with traditional lapels (as opposed to a Mandarin collar), the collar device should be worn upright, one inch above the notch where the lapel meets the collar. It must be centered between the outer edge and the collar seam for regulation compliance and sharp appearance.
